"INGERSOLL "A" AND PAMEER FC EVENLY MATCHED " - May 10, 2008 James H. Sipila - League Writer (photos Cam Vassallo)
Windemere Field: The WOSL's Division 3 teams Ingersoll "A" and Pameer FC appeared evenly matched in this fine Saturday evening game. Sunny yet breezy conditions gave way to an overcast sky in a 1-1 draw - the first game of the season for both clubs. Click Here To View Gallery
From the beginning,
it seemed apparent that although they were playing
on the same field, these clubs were very different.
In terms of style of play, Pameer FC (whose namesake
is Mt. Pameer in Afghanistan) was generally more
nimble footed and handled the ball with
significantly more finesse; while Ingersoll played a
typically more aggressive North American style and
was perhaps the more physically stronger and older
of the two teams.
Throughout the first half, these differences were apparent, yet enjoyable to watch from a spectators point of view. Ingersoll struck first as they penetrated Pameer's defensive zone in fairly easy fashion - perhaps earning a "soft" goal at about the 10 minute mark.
Although it was not only the first game of the season for Pameer FC (actually it constituted the first in the history of their team - according to their team's President, O.M. Wahid), they regrouped and increased their efforts - resulting in a fine passing play and the tying goal on the 16 year-old net minder for the team in red shortly thereafter.
Through the remainder of the first half, the two teams differing styles and approach to the game continued to be exemplified as the referee began to make increasing efforts to keep the slowly developing rough play at bay.
The second half was a slightly different story however, as either team seemed to put in an even greater effort, all the while adapting to each other's style of play. Ingersoll began to create better passing scenarios and increase their on-field cooperation; while Pameer (in white) became steadily more aggressive. Several shots on goal were made by both sides throughout the period, and both teams failed to convert on "empty-net" situations.
And although not completely "tested," both net minders remained solid in goal. Throughout the bulk of the second half however, more attention was paid to the mid-field area as the referee attempted to mitigate perceived and real offences made by and against either team. Effort levels by both sides remained high however, with several players possibly exhibiting some signs of fatigue. Somewhat aggressive back and forth play ensued and the final whistle blew to conclude a one-to-one draw.
